Arches by samburley Arches by samburley
Arches is another National Park in eastern Utah.

I suppose I should have put some arches in this.... oh well. They are all over the park in real life, large and small, carved by wind.

May I ask how you get such sharply defined brushstrokes like in the far background, or the rock on the right? Do you use a selection tool or are these just done with certain shaped brushes? The bushes in the forefront too, are these creations of paint -> eraser -> paint and kind of shaped that way? or is it custom brushes at work? Sorry if these questions are trade secrets! :p

Dammit, Sam! That's bloody amazing. Reaaally love the colours and values here. You conveyed such an immense depth and such natural seeming forms. Love it. How close is this to the original reference? =] Must've been amazing to be there...

There's a particularly expressionistic feel of desert here.

Thanks! I'm definitely in love with Utah, and I'm only halfway through painting from my photos there :)

oh man I love all the landscapes you've been uploading recently. It seems insane that these national parks are -real- places, they seem too beautiful to be true! I've never been out to the American west and this makes me want to go more than ever... thanks for all the great paintings :)
